B+W has announced their very clever variable neutral density filter is now in production and will be available to us in mid August.
Variable ND filters are useful to a great many photographers. The ND provides a seamless transition from 1 stop of ND to 5.
From the B+W press release:
Portrait photographers need for example even in bright ambient light large apertures in order to optically separate the subject from the background. Using extremely long expo-sure times, architectural photographers can make people passing through the subject “invisible”. In landscape photography flowing water or the sea surface in broad daylight appears fluffy and soft when using long exposure times
Thanks to its step-less adjustable density control the B+W Vario ND filter can be exactly
adapted to individual requirements. For this purpose it comes with an index setting allowing the photographer to set the density between +1 and +5 stops. The filter is optimally colour-neutral and guarantees a professional image performance without abberations.
The Vario ND filter can be combined with further ND filters of fixed ND values,
leading to considerably higher density values.
The B+W XS-Pro Digital ND Vario filters are all MRC nano coated and available in
Ø 52, 58, 62, 67, 72, 77 and 82 mm, supplied in the practical B+W transport box.
