Ken Rockwell in a recent review of the new Sony A99 has assured us that due to recent advancements in electronic viewfinder technology that “It’s easy to shoot directly into the sun since you’re never blinded by the electronic finder.” Classic Rockwell!

Surprisingly, there is already a large amount of photographs of the sun on flickr. I found some “sun photography” groups that were first published 7 years before today. (http://www.flickr.com/search/?q=solar%20photography , http://www.flickr.com/groups/solarmax/)
I wonder how they did it.
